Milk Teeth

Milk Teeth is an installation composed of several works: When We are Born, We Consume the Cosmos (ceiling work) and If the Earth Is Mother, the Pacific Basin is her Womb (stone work), which was activated by a community performance of the Water Song and exhibited at the David Ireland House in San Francisco, CA.

When We are Born, We Consume the Cosmos is ceiling print composed of 100’s of images of nursing mothers (predominantly Isis and Mary) layered to the backdrop of an image of the milky way from Nasa. It invokes the myth of Hera feeding Hercules, when he bit her nipple and her breastmilk sprayed across the sky to create the milky way.

If the Earth Is Mother, the Pacific Basin is her Womb is a limestone sculpture with seven phases of the moon carved into it. During the “Water Song Performance”, composed by interdisciplinary artist Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, 30 mothers poured breastmilk into the sculpture that slowly evaporated over the course of the exhibition.

Milk Teeth is supported by the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Andy Warhol Foundation. All photos by Henrik Kam
